AT&T 2G Sunset is Happening NowFrequently Asked Questions
Why is AT&T shutting down the 2G network?
“Mobile data traffic in the United States grew by 75,000 percent over a six year span, from 2001 to 2006. In the nine years that followed, mobile data traffic on the AT&T national wireless network increased 150,000 percent (from 2007 through 2015). Reallocating capacity to our more advanced wireless networks will help more of our customers have a better experience.” – Source: AT&T FAQs
How does the 2G Sunset affect wireless security systems?
Wireless security systems use cellular signal technology like the 2G, 3G and 4G networks. Many older wireless security systems were installed with a GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) device that primarily uses 2G networks for communication. Hence, when the 2G network is closed on Sunday, January 1st 2017 (or before depending on your area) any wireless security systems originally configured with a 2G based GSM won’t have the ability to communicate security alarm signals. Therefore, you should begin to prepare for the communication failure with your system! Call us with any questions.
