How Technology in the Security Industry Has Progressed

It is amazing to see how technology in the security industry has progressed over the past twenty years. We have shifted from hardwired alarms to wireless alarms to home automation . What was the most interesting thing about all of these new technologies? It was the affordability and the ease of installation. This past fall, ATP Alarms installed a very unique alarm and surveillance system at a customer’s home that illustrates the current technology.

The scenario, a prospective customer purchased a home next to a day / boarding school in Connecticut. It was the parents’ intention to have the students go to the school as day students but live in this off campus home as it was more affordable than paying for room and board. Needless to say, the father was very security conscious and wanted to make sure that his kids were safe and sound. He also wanted to be able to monitor the home from afar in case he was not staying with them. With that said, he had the following goals in mind.

First and foremost , he wanted fire protection up to current code. This entailed placing monitored smoke detectors on every floor, each bedroom, and every hallway to every bedroom.
Second , he needed CO protection so we placed CO detectors on every floor.
Third , we decided to contact every perimeter access point to provide maximum protection for when the young adults were in the home alone.
Lastly , the father wanted a surveillance system that would record but also send him clips whenever someone entered or left the house.

ATP Alarms was able to install a Total Connect enabled 3-camera home surveillance system with a camera over the front door, the back door, and in the front hallway. Whenever someone entered the view of the camera, the parents were emailed a 10 second clip. This allowed the parents to monitor their home while away and I am sure deterred the children from having too many guests over. If there was an alert of the system, they would receive a text or e-mail too. This system also had a DVR, which we configured with one Honeywell ACU per camera. This gave our client the benefits of Total Connect and at the same time means the customer has the ability to rewind and see what had transpired over the past few days.

What’s the most interesting thing about the above installation? I never even met the parents! Through detailed email correspondence and phone conversations, ATP Alarms was able to handle the entire installation and activation of the home security and video surveillance system. In the old days, installations would have been intrusive and disturbing—not anymore.

Security alarms can communicate via internet (hardwired or WiFi depending on the system), phone line, or cellular. Often security alarms have two communication paths—one that is primary and one that is backup. ATP Alarms encourages all customers to have a back up form of communication in the event the primary fails. We believe that the best is setup for fast and reliable communication is internet/WiFi primary with cellular backup. We feel that the internet communication is the fastest while the cellular is most reliable. Traditional alarms relied on phone lines to communicate.
