Do you share a wall or ceiling with your neighbor? How much do you trust them?—with your life?

American Total Protection has two main offices—Hamden, CT and Melbourne, FL. Recently, there was an apartment fire at an apartment complex in Hamden, CT that displaced several families. The cause of the fire was accidental—a pot of boiling oil overflowed.

Do you live in an apartment building? If so, does each unit have a smoke detector? Are they monitored? Just because your apartment building has smoke detectors, it does not mean they are connected to a central alarm system that communicates to the fire department or a central monitoring station. Remember, although you may be responsible and turn off the lights when you leave , blow out the candles , and not leave a kitchen unattended , it does not mean that your neighbors are equally responsible. If a fire erupts next door, you and the fire department needs to be notified immediately— every second counts.

This advice goes for those living in any complex that shares a wall or ceiling with someone. Many condominiums do not have interconnected smokes. Meaning, just because your neighbors’ smoke detectors go off, does not mean your smoke detectors will. With that in mind, it is a good idea to install your own home security with a monitored heat and smoke detectors. Heat detectors in addition to smoke detectors are a great idea because if a fire is brewing in the walls, it may be too late by the time the smoke detectors in your unit are triggered.
