ATP Alarms is in the life safety business . Whether it is home security or safety tips while traveling , we want to provide knowledge in order to help people avoid danger and in turn have a better piece of mind . Everyday we engage in activities that can potentially be very dangerous. Being well prepared can make the difference between a success trip and tragedy. This piece will focus on hydroplaning —something that happens while driving your car in rainy conditions.
Hydroplaning occurs when the amount of water on the road builds up very quickly to the point that the weight of your car cannot push it out of the way . As a result, your car rises up and glides on top of the water , making it much more difficult to control your vehicle . In fact, it may even feel like your vehicle is gliding. No matter how big or small, expensive or inexpensive, all cars are susceptible to hydroplaning. In order to reduce your risk of hydroplaning , follow these steps:
1. Drive slowly
2. Make sure that your tires are inflated
to the recommend level
3. Change your tires regularly
. If you are not sure of the condition of your tires, many tire or auto shop shops will offer a free assessment
4. Avoid puddles
(roads are pitched for draining purposes and puddles often accumulate on outside lanes)
5. Limit quick and sharp turns
6. Do not have your car set for cruise control
Should you do find yourself in a situation where your car is hydroplaning, taking following steps may help.
1. Do not accelerate
. Hydroplaning can occur with very light rain. To best mitigate your risk, drive slower than 35 miles per hour.
2. If you begin to hydroplane, remain calm— do not slam on the brake and ease off the gas
. Slowly ease on the brakes (if you have ABS) and steer the car in the direction that you want to go.
I hope that the previous advice was helpful. If you ever feel uncomfortable while driving, pull off to the road to safe place and wait for the storm to pass—nothing is more important than your safety.
Remember, the best offense is a good defense—be proactive and not reactive. If you ever have any questions regarding life safety , please do not hesitate to call ATP Alarms .
