Modern Residential Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detector System

Monitored Security, Smoke & Fire Alarm System

Homeowners often have hardwired high-voltage local smoke detectors in their home. These smoke detectors are not monitored but are “local”. Meaning, if the smoke detector goes off, it will make noise but not call anyone. American Total Protection provides monitored smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Meaning, if they go off, the homeowner and authorities will get a phone call.

Security System Objectives

Our client had a system installed by a local competitor that recently sold to a National firm. The homeowner had a hardwiredsecurity alarm system with monitored security devices. In addition, he had local high-voltage (110) smoke detectors tied into the system usinga relay. “High Voltage” smoke detectors must be installed and replaced by a licensed electrician and cannot be replaced or repaired by a low-voltage alarm company.

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, the homeowner experienced several false fire alarms due to the smoke detectors installed by an electrician 10 years ago. When the client called his previous alarm company, he was told to find a local electrician to look at his unmonitored smoke detectors and that the alarm company could not help.

The homeowner lost faith in his alarm company because of the false alarms and lack of support from his provider.

Security Solution

American Total Protection LLC was introduced to the homeowner by a neighbor that has been an ATP Alarms customer for 5+ years. Through a preliminary phone call with the homeowner’s daughter, ATP explained clearly how although the smoke detectors are tied into the alarm through a relay, a low-voltage alarm company should not service them.

American Total Protection owns a full service electrical business, ATP Electric (www.ATP-Electric.com) and could offer a solution. After meeting with ATP onsite at his Fairfield home, the homeowner decided to engage American Total Protection to take over the existing system (and add the smartphone application) and ATP-Electric to replace all the “high voltage” smoke detectors and carbon-monoxide detectors in the home.

The homeowner also enrolled in ATP’s annual inspection plan where a licensed ATP technician will inspect the system annually and change batteries as needed.

ATP Alarms went above and beyond in helping my family and me set up alarm systems in our home and all of our businesses. I would highly recommend this company to anyone!

Most alarm companies in Connecticut do not employee electricians but rather technicians holding a low-voltage license. Although very capable in installing and maintaining alarm and security systems, these technicians cannot perform electrical work. American Total Protection distinguishes itself from competitors by owning a full service electrical business. Whether it is installing or changing high voltage smokes or installing a whole house generator, American Total Protection and ATP-Electric can assist.

ATP Alarm Communications
By Rence Coassin November 23, 2020
Security alarms can communicate via internet (hardwired or WiFi depending on the system), phone line, or cellular. Often security alarms have two communication paths—one that is primary and one that is backup. ATP Alarms encourages all customers to have a back up form of communication in the event the primary fails. We believe that the best is setup for fast and reliable communication is internet/WiFi primary with cellular backup. We feel that the internet communication is the fastest while the cellular is most reliable. Traditional alarms relied on phone lines to communicate.
