There are several steps you can take to better secure your property. When assessing the vulnerability of your home or business, there are some preliminary questions that you should ask yourself:
What makes your property a “target” for a home or business break in?
This can refer to many things. Do you leave packages on your front step? Do you leave that new TV box at the curb? Do you have public social media accounts where you may broadcast your lifestyle and belongings? All these things can encourage criminals to target your property. We encourage clients to mitigate their risk by consciously managing what they share with the public, whether that be taking a social media account private or breaking down that new SONOS box before you put it on the curb.
Are your easy entry points visible from the street?
If your property has low or ground level windows, are they visible to the street or neighbors? Do you have a glass door that is visible to others? We inform our clients to maintain their landscaping to make sure that easy access points remain visible. Thieves will be deterred from entering through a window or through a glass door if it is not protected with overgrown shrubs. If these entry points are not visible, we encourage alarm sensors for those entry points.
Is your property well lit?
Proper lighting and motion lights deter nighttime break ins from happening. Criminals (at least the good ones) prefer anonymity. If you have motion lights on your property, you better the chances of a car thief moving on to the next driveway.
Do I have visible deterrents?
While proper lighting and well-maintained landscaping may deter criminals from targeting your property, there are other very visible deterrents that better your chances of avoiding a break-in. These could be an electric fence sign or a dog sign, visible cameras, or an alarm/video surveillance sign.
When assessing your property’s security, it starts with mitigating the chances that your location will be broken into. The simple low-cost solutions above are proactive steps to take.
