Fire Extinguishers should be in all homes and businesses as another layer of home security. If someone does not like the idea of carrying guns or knives for personal protection, one could use a fire extinguisher for that purpose too. Fire Extinguishers are pressurized cylinders with a squeeze of the handle can project a cloud of dry chemical powder in a certain direction. Now fire extinguishers are designed to put out small fires and should never be considered the sole method of personal protection, but if anyone finds themselves in a bind, a fire extinguisher could be the answer for safety. I have heard stories of fire extinguishers being used to back off invaders or break up fights. The cloud of powder that is projected from the hose of the fire extinguishers causes irritation to the eyes and throat and makes it difficult for one to see or breathe.
Friends of ours that live in a two story house like keeping the fire extinguisher next to the bed. These people don’t have any training with hand guns, nor like the idea of a loaded gun in the house. But they told me that they feel better knowing that the fire extinguisher is nearby and has dual purpose . They explained to me that if the stairwell was on fire, the fire extinguisher could end up to be their only means of escape with knocking the flames down just enough to get by. Or the self-defense purpose with using it to shoot down at an invader and making it very difficult for one to go up the stairs or into their bed room.
I have also seen in movies where a fire extinguisher was used in assistance of “the good or bad guys” escaping from an area. I have seen scenes where someone has shot the fire extinguisher creating a small explosion of powder in the area. This was used as a decoy, cover screen, or startling method to assist in their doings.
So keep in mind, the household or office fire extinguisher could be used to put out the fire or put out the invader.
