Fear, we all experience it at some point in our lives. There a lots of things to fear, such as public speaking, big dogs, Brussels sprouts, or my personal favorite – tight spaces. The fear I’m talking about today hits closer to home, personal safety; for the purposes of this blog personal safety means you, your family, and your home.
Ask ten people you know if they have ever experienced a break-in at their home. Chances are at least one of those friends has experienced a break-in at some point in their life. If that one friend is male, he was and probably still is, REALLY angry about what happened. Someone came into HIS house and stole HIS stuff! How dare they! "Next time I’ll be ready" your friend says. However, if that friend is female, she is more than likely still very shaken-up over the incident. Women often say how they have felt violated, afraid to be in their own home and just generally creeped out. "I can’t believe a stranger was in my house, touching my things" your friend says.
Even worse, ask ten of your friends if they have ever been physically assaulted. The chances increase dramatically – probably at least half (or more) of them have. But think about this – one in four of your female friends may have been either physically or sexually assaulted, and this may have happened in her own home. Many women today have empowered themselves by becoming more aware of their surroundings, maybe carrying some pepper spray. But that does little to alleviate those fears that both men and women have about their personal safety and the safety of their family.
Today’s home alarm systems offer peace of mind to families when they are away from home. No strangers creeping around the house, touching your stuff, etc…, but consider this, what about when you ARE home? This is where most people don’t realize some of the built-in personal safety features a home security system offers;
– Panic Buttons – most alarm systems have panic buttons built right into the keypad. They typically have police, fire, and emergency buttons that can be pressed so that the monitoring company will dispatch the proper authority. This is all done in a matter of seconds.
– Duress Codes / Passwords – most alarm systems have a special duress code that is entered by the user to notify the Monitoring Company that they are under duress and need help immediately. Also, alternate passwords can be given to the Monitoring Company to let them know something is up and you need help.
– Cameras – Today’s state-of-the-art alarm systems also offer customers the ability to "watch" their home while they are at work, which for some parents of latch-key kids gives them notification from the monitoring company when their kids get home from school. Usually this includes a video from a small wireless camera showing the parent (or pet parent) that their child is home, safe and sound.
Fear does play a big part in our daily lives; just watch the news or one of the infinite crime dramas on TV! Knowing that you are doing all that you can to protect your loved ones is important. Having a professionally installed and monitored security system by ATP Alarms in your home will show your loved ones how much you love and respect them and want to lessen THEIR fears. If you travel for work, have latch-key kids, or worry about Fido when you are not there – peace of mind is just a phone call or click away. Protect who you love .
