As I have gotten older, more of my family, friends, and acquaintances have started to become these little things that we like to call “ snowbirds ”. As soon as Thanksgiving passes, they start to pack their suitcases to head somewhere much warmer for the next 4 to 5 months. Having grown up in New England, I cannot imagine going an entire year without the cold weather or snow. To me, Christmas just wouldn’t seem the same—but, to each his own. The one thing that stands out to me though is that a lot of people who are snowbirds leave theirs homes unprotected for an extended period of time.
Did any pipes burst ? Did anyone break in and steal my valuables ? Am I going to come home to a bunch of squatters living in my home ? While some people may think that is crazy and could never happen to them, these are all serious issues that could happen to you if you leave your home unprotected.
Imagine coming home from your nice relaxing vacation in Naples, Florida to a basement that is filled with water? Probably not how you want to spend your first day or two back in your home, am I right?
Many snow birds hire property managers to check up on the home once a week to make sure everything is okay. While this is better than nothing, I have seen cases where property managers are being paid a couple of hundred dollars per week just to make a routine fifteen minute check in. Of course if you have a property manager they will find out eventually if something occurred, but what if you had something that could alert you ahead of time so you didn’t have to spend a fortune fixing and replacing items?
It’s actually mind boggling to me that people who travel for extended periods of time do not have any type of protection in their home. You can protect your home in every way imaginable just by putting a security system in your residence. Whether its temperature detectors, intrusion, smoke, carbon , the possibilities are endless and by installing a system you will have that peace of mind that you probably crave when you’re away.
